Base One, the space base builder game where you take control of a network of space stations and its crew, released in May this year on Steam. I reviewed the game at release and enjoyed it’s awesome setting and intricate details of each base module. Developed by PixFroze and published by Blowfish Studios, development is still ongoing for consoles and a new DLC titled Consequences will be releasing on September 16, 2021 for Steam players.
This new DLC will add Episode 4 to the story missions as well as new options for custom games. New additions to the game include the Barracks, Guards and Perks, Military Living Unit and Trainer, a Terrorist Stealth Ship and more. I recently asked some questions of Mark from PixFroze about Base One, how the console version is coming along and what’s next for the game.
What makes Base One stand out amongst other base building and colony games on the market today?
Our game is a mixture of different game mechanics from different genres. In addition to the simulation and control of the station, there are elements of survival and RPG here. We also have a plot, which is not often found in games of this genre.
How big is the development team and how long did it take to develop the game to the current build?
Our team is 4 people. The development stage lasted for almost 2 years and after the release, we had to make a lot of changes to the game.
How is development of Base One progressing on consoles and is there a time frame for release?
At the moment we are testing control and tweaking an interface for the console. Currently slated for a Q4 2021 release, we will confirm an exact date later on in the year.
What was the most challenging feature of Base One to implement?
Artificial intelligence of characters. We have never encountered so much complex programming. We have completely rewritten the control code several times. While it performs well overall, it is still far from ideal.
What has been the most rewarding part of developing Base One and now releasing the first DLC to the players worldwide?
We have gained valuable experience in developing games of this genre and a lot of feedback from players (many thanks to them!). We are still new to this business; we did not know and did not understand a lot. We are confident that this will help us in the development of future projects.
What can players expect in this first free DLC, and any hints at the second DLC yet?
The DLC introduces several new mechanics that will add variety to the gameplay and add a bit of action. It’s unusual and exciting at the same time. We’re always looking at DLC plans for the future!
What’s next for PixFroze?
We are thinking about a sequel. This would help us realize the full potential of the project and all the ideas that are not included in the current version, as well as take into account a number of mistakes and get rid of some bad decisions.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
We would like to address the players. Game development is a very fun and sometimes exciting process, but at the same time it is hard work with an unknown end result. And despite this, we are a team of passionate people who love what they do. Thank you!
Base One is available now on Steam, and the first DLC titled Consequences releases on September 16, 2021. Development of the base game on consoles is ongoing with a Q4 2021 release window.
