Mothers are not only an integral part of society but also in the video game world. They play a variety of roles in both real life and in-game scenarios. From being a blood relative to a caregiver, mothers come in all forms and each plays a unique and important role.
In the real world, mothers are often the ones who help to shape the early years of a child’s life. They provide a nurturing environment that helps to foster a child’s development and growth. They teach important life skills, provide emotional support, and often serve as role models for their children.
In video games, mothers can be found in a variety of roles, from main protagonists to supporting characters. They are often depicted as strong, caring, and protective figures who are willing to go to great lengths to protect their children and those in their care.
Let’s take a look at the GOA teams favourite in game mothers in celebration of Mothers Day 2023!
Naru from Ori And The Blind Forest
The Ori games are stunningly beautiful and tell an amazing story through very little text. With such emotion it’s no wonder that my pick for the best mother in video games is Naru. Such a caring soul, she becomes Ori’s only parental figure. She cares for him, makes sure he wants for nothing and when he is taken away from her, she sets out on an adventure of her own to find her adoptive child.
The devotion of Naru to Ori reminds me of my own parents, but in particular my mum. Words cannot express how much she means to me. Happy Mother’s Day mum!

Jun Kazama from the Tekken series
Jun is everything you need in a mum – she is compassionate, fiercely protective, and kick ass.
Her lore is ambiguous due to her appearances and references in canon and non-canon entries in the Tekken game series, movie, comic, and animated series (currently on Netflix). Her back story is that she works as a wildlife protection officer, who is spiritual and psychic with a deep connection to nature.
Jun teaches her son Jin to fight against the devil gene inside of him using Kazama Traditional Martial Arts. She protects her son when Ogre attacks them.
As Unknown, the final boss supernatural entity she appeared as during the non-canon tag series games, she protects her son Jin and removes the influence of the devil gene on him.
Her recent announced return for Tekken 8 shows her unique chip damage style and heat healing skill will make her a competitive adversary for any challenger.

Lady Dimitrescu from Resident Evil Village
In the crazy world of the Resident Evil series stands my favourite mum of all the mums, Lady Dimitrescu. Mother to Bella, Cassandra and Daniela. She has been alive since World War 1 and cared for her children all the while maintaining the nobility required of a woman of her stature at Castle Dimitrescu and what a stature that is.
Standing at 9ft 6in she was a fantastic mother without the need of a man. She could reach the high shelves and carry heavy items, thus not needing a man around to help her.
With so much love for her children, she raised them to be independent. Only when the meddlesome Ethan Winters invaded the castle and killed her daughters off one by one did she make the greatest sacrifice of all. Mutating into a huge dragon to attempt to avenge her daughter’s death.
Unfortunately for Lady Dimitrescu, she lost her life trying to exact her revenge. After a century this beautiful anomaly of a woman was taken from the world way too soon.

Alexstraza – World of Warcraft
Alexstrasza is a character in the World of Warcraft universe who is known as the “Life-Binder” and the “Dragon Queen.” She is considered a mother figure because of her role as a caretaker and protector of all living creatures, particularly the dragonflights.
In the lore of the game, Alexstrasza is one of five dragon aspects who were empowered by the Titans to watch over Azeroth. Her duties as the Aspect of Life include preserving the balance of nature and the well-being of all living creatures. She is also responsible for ensuring the continuation of her dragonflight by overseeing the hatching and upbringing of dragon eggs.
Furthermore, Alexstrasza has been shown to have a nurturing and protective personality, as demonstrated by her interactions with her fellow dragons and the other races of Azeroth. She has a strong sense of empathy and compassion, and is willing to put herself in harm’s way to defend those in need.
