Last month, Cospendium partnered with CouchWarriors and held an online tournament in Super Smash Bros Ultimate (SSBU), with a record breaking 352 competitors competing over seven hours. It was the highest-ever volume of entrants to sign up to a single game in the Aus & NZ region and is now a monthly tournament leading into main live event at the main Cospendium convention. This was an initiative put in place given all of the Covid restrictions causing the move of the originally planned dates in July to January 30-31, 2021 at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens, Melbourne.
Now, Cospendium SSBU Community League: Presented by CouchWarriors has announced the next SSBU tournament is scheduled for this Sunday June 21, with the contests to continue throughout 2020 on the third Sunday of every month. In the spirit of community, the contest is free and open to players of all skill levels. There’s even cash prizes, prestige Zenox gaming chairs, event tickets and more up for grabs!
“The responsible thing to do was move the Cospendium event itself to next year, but we still wanted to create something that fans could look forward to every month in 2020.” Says event founder Philip Rainford. “Esports is becoming a huge force in the entertainment industry, and we’re thrilled that we’ve already made local gaming history with our tournament debut. We want to keep this going so that fans at home are happy and entertained!”
Esports is an incredibly fast-growing global industry which is estimated to have generated $1.1 billion in revenue last year across advertising, sponsorship and media rights. Esports analytics platform NewZoo predicts that the number of casual viewers of competitive gameplay will balloon to 495 million people this year. “The debut Cospendium Tournament: Presented by CouchWarriors was a record success and proves this is a great way for us to keep the community connected and in high spirits during a tough time.” Says CouchWarriors Strategic Director Daniel Chlebowczyk.

Cospendium will launch on Saturday 30 January 2021 and run until the evening of Sunday 31 January 2021 with headline guests William Shatner and Mel Gibson confirmed to be in attendance. The convention will feature celebrity meet and greets, gaming tournaments, artist and cosplay stalls, cosplay competitions, prize giveaways, an immersive Viking banquet and plenty more!
