HAVE you ever wondered what it’d be like to try to date a Godzilla-like creature? No? I hadn’t until I came across Kaichu: The Kaiju Dating Sim. Nothing like being a Kaiju, finding another Kaiju to love and pounding on famous landmarks.
No, that isn’t a euphemism. I am being literal. You go on a date with your love interest, having fun pounding and destroying some famous landmarks worldwide.
Kaichu: The Kaiju Dating Sim is a fun little indie game, Developed by Squiddershins and Published by Top Hat Studios, Inc. for PC, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One & Series X/S & Nintendo Switch, available from Sept 7th.
You play Gigachu, a pink Godzilla-like kaiju out looking for love. You have six love interests to choose from, all with different traits you must learn on your way to wooing your partner. Things from if they like certain environments to their temperaments.
You have full access to the map as soon as the game starts, and the story plays out as if a segment on the news with two anchors giving their interpretation of the events while you answer compatibility questions on your date with another kaiju. The best response will make you both go pound crazy on the landmark of your choice. A successful date usually results in the complete and utter demise of the landmark. Pay your respects to Sydney Harbour Bridge now; it may not survive your encounter with your love interest.
The controls for the game are pretty simple, I used a controller on most of my playthroughs but did one with the keyboard. Be prepared to use your arrow keys with the keyboard rather than WASD. The art style is very cute, but one of my favourite things about the game that shows its inclusivity is you can pick your pronouns at the beginning of the game. Its default pronoun is ‘Chu/Chu’, but outside of that, it’s not limited to He/Him, She/Her or They/Them. Ze/Zir, Ae/Aer and the rest are also included.
Consisting of 3 acts, each playthrough took me about an hour to complete. The only thing I wish was improved on would be the questions not being so repetitive, but this is definitely a game worth grabbing if you just want to sit back and relax for a little bit or even play during your lunch break on your Switch.
