AFTER years sitting idly by as Microsoft released various renditions of their Xbox Elite Wireless Controller, Sony has finally decided to join the premium controller party by announcing the DualSense Edge during the Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase.
The roughly 30 second trailer provided a brief but welcome glimpse at the premium controller, highlighting the expected features on a controller of this kind, such as adjustable triggers, replaceable stick modules, and back buttons, to name a few.
Visually, other than the new added buttons, there isn’t a great difference in design when compared to the original white DualSense controller. It replaces the white face buttons, directional pad and touchpad with black variants instead, which I think is a nice look, however the black section where the thumbsticks reside seems to now have a glossy finish, which is sure become home to your fingerprints.
A post released not long after the trailer via the PlayStation Blog provided further details on the controller, such as its ability to save control profiles, and the addition of a function button that can not only switch between profiles, but also toggle settings such as game volume and chat balance.
Thumbsticks and triggers alike can be fine-tuned to the users liking, with the ability to adjust things such as travel distance and dead zones, with thumbstick modules also replaceable.
There are also three different stick cap variants (standard, high dome, and low dome) and two sets of back buttons, leaving you free to experiment and find the controller settings that work best for you.
The controller even comes with a carrying case and braided USB-C cable, which is always a nice touch for a premium controller.
While the DualSense Edge sounds and looks like a welcome high-end controller for the PlayStation 5, we aren’t yet privy to either the controllers launch date or price, with the blog post stating more details will release regarding the controller in the months ahead.
As someone who predominately plays on the PS5, the idea of getting my hands on a more customisable DualSense excites me greatly, however I’m keen to see its price before biting the bullet.
