WITH only two weeks to go before the launch of NBA 2K21, the team behind MyTEAM, Visual Concepts, have shared changes and additions made to the popular game mode this year. Along with dropping a plethora of information overnight via the MyTEAM Courtside Report, a brand new trailer has also been released focusing on the MyTEAM of 2020 and beyond.
As we’re all well aware, next-gen consoles are expected to drop this coming holiday season. What you should buy now and what you should hold out for until the end of the year is already up for question. This would also mean concern with the course of NBA 2K21’s lifespan running through the upcoming transition into next-gen. As previously reported, MyTEAM progression will transfer from current to next-gen. But as long as you play both gen versions within the same console family. They’ve even made it so current gen Mamba Forever Edition owners will automatically have acces to next-gens Standard Edition at no extra cost. The development team have also revealed that they’ve made it so MyTEAM progression will transfer seamlessly.
“The carryover is quite simple and there is nothing you need to do. In fact, you can even go back and forth playing the current gen version and the next gen version at-will,” says executive producer at Visual Concepts, Erick Boenisch.
Console versatility aside, the changes to MyTEAM focus mainly around the addition of Seasonal Content. Seasons are to said to keep NBA 2K21 feeling fresh all year round. But apart from prizing updates to modes throughout, Erick Boenisch refrained from going into too much detail about MyTEAM staying fresh year-round. “I’m going to be intentionally vague here so as not to spoil any plans,” says Boenisch, “Some Seasons will add new content for you to play, while other Seasons may add new features to the game, or add a reward twist that you will be chasing all Season.”
Seasons are expected to be around 6-weeks in length and will allow players to gain XP through daily, weekly and seasonal-based agendas. The prize at the end of the Season 1 rainbow has also been revealed. All your hard work and grind will pay off with a Pink Diamond Steph Curry card. While prizing updates include changes to already existing content, the majority revolve around the new additions to MyTEAM.
Pre-existing content updates include new ‘Vault’ prizes and new ‘Cumulative Win’ prizes added every season for single player Triple Threat. This will keep the mode fresh and continuously add additional ‘Wins’ to the ladder starting at 300, as opposed to NBA 2K20’s limit of 1000. Triple Threat Online has also been included in the seasonal updates via ‘Boards’. They’ll be updated every season and will pop up to give you a prize refresher every time you enter Triple Threat Online.
New content updates also means huge changes with the introduction of MyTEAM Limited and an entire revamp of MyTeam Unlimited. Known as Unlimited 2.0, this mode will apparently keep players on their toes through the 9 leagues they have to compete in to make it to the top. Consisting of 12 games per League, each League requires a certain number of wins to reach the next. But there’s a catch. If you don’t meet the win requirements for league you’re in, you must meet another win requirement out of 12 games to stay on that level. Of course, each season will bring a reset to Unlimited 2.0. Erick Boenisch also confirms how the revamps has the dev teams tick of approval. “The internal feedback on MyTEAM Unlimited 2.0 has been very positive,” says Boenisch.
MyTEAM Limited however has a whole new exciting goal to reach for: The Championship Ring. There will be new Rings up for grabs every weekend which can be won through online 5v5 matches. But there’s a whole new reward system behind it. Winning matches will get you a prize which you can either keep or trade in for a mystery box. There will be two mystery moxes to choose from which may contain something better or worse than what you won. It might also contain the Championship Ring for the week. At the end of the season, you can trade in your Championship Rings for tier-based prizes depending on how many you obtained for the season. But collecting every Ring will reward you with the seasons grand prize.
MyTEAM Limited will also be changing up the meta every single weekend by restricting which players you can use. Erick Boenisch also gave us examples of what the restrictions may include. “One weekend we may limit you to players 23 years old and younger. Another weekend, we may say that all players in your lineup need to be Ruby or lower,” says Boenisch, “The controls we have built in will allow us to create some very fun combinations that will both allow and encourage you to use a wider breadth of the cards in your collection.”
Big changes will also be made to cards and how they can be obtained, upgraded and even exchanged. The Exchange is a new way to get rid of card you no longer or never used to gain cards that will have actual value to your lineup. Erick Boenisch also explains how future plans might also affect what cards are obtained from The Exchange. “Some cards will even look ho-hum on the surface, but we secretly have future plans for that card where they will be invaluable,” Boenisch exclaims while also dropping a, “cough MyTEAM Limited cough.” With the ever-changing meta within MyTEAM Limited, what cards might not be the best might change in the future.
A new prize mechanism called Ascension has also been weaved into the new Seasonal content. Three tiers of prizes are available where players will flip over cards to either obtain prizes or ‘level up.’ Some cards will let you ascend to the next tier which is where you can find the grand prize card. But this can only within a certain amount of picks. Along with level ups and prizes, cards will also include additional picks. Erick also “paints a picture” of what Ascension looks like.
“In the picture, you can see the Seasonal grand prize up in the top-left corner and my number of picks remaining in the lower-left corner. On my next flip, I actually got a 2x MTP Multiplier. The flip after that I got 500 MTP. With the 2x multiplier active, that means I’m taking home 1,000 free MTP on top of whatever else I can earn. Easy, fun, and just another way for us to reward you for your accomplishments in NBA 2K21! Go get that grand prize, my friends! Oh, you want to know what the Season 1 grand prize is going to be? How does a Pink Diamond card sound? If you are doing the math between the Season Level prize, the Unlimited prize, the Limited prize, the Triple Threat Offline prize, and the Ascension prize, you can quickly see the quality of the cards that are going to be available by simply playing the mode and showing your skill on the sticks. Good luck everyone!”
Customization is also coming to Card Evolutions as well while also making a return to Card Badges. Customizable Evolutions will now allow you to take unique paths with Evolution Cards depending on how you want certain stars to play. “Shaquille O’Neal is one of our Starter Pack options this year,” Erick spoils, “One of his evolution tiers is going to offer you the choice between Rebound Chaser (improved rebounding ability) and Rim Protector (better shot blocking ability). It’s a tough choice. Do you want your Shaq to be a better rebounder, or more menacing around the rim?” Upgrade requirements will also be based of which Badge you choose to chase.
Badge Customization is back after making a no show in NBA 2K20 . This means you can once again upgrade badges from Bronze all the way to Hall of Fame. The process of upgrading means you’ll require a bronze badge to go to silver, a silver to go onto gold, etc. Hall of Fame badges will be very rare and will primarily be obtained through prizing and playing the game. Erick Boenisch has given a tip though. “Season level rewards is one area where you can definitely find these.”
Lastly, a new premium Collection is coming to MyTEAM called the IDOL Series collection. These will be spread across 15 special releases with the first Pink Diamond card coming next month. “The IDOLS Series, as the name would imply, is going to feature some of the NBA’s most memorable players, with a healthy mix of present vs. past.” Boenisch explains, “These are the players you are going to want filling every position in your lineup, as they will generally be the best cards available in the mode at the time of their release.”
Erick Boenisch also touches on a bunch of other exciting content coming to NBA 2K21 including an obtainable Holographic Ball, MyTEAM Promo Packs and Signature Challenges. All of which we’ll be able to check out when NBA 2K21 launches on September 4.
