Joseph: Collapse is a fitting end to these villainous DLC releases, and if Joseph Seed was a favourite of yours, this is a good chance to see the aftermath of Far Cry 5 from his perspective.
Far Cry 6 Joseph: Collapse releases tomorrow, February 8 and it continues the Vaas: Insanity and Pagan: Control methods of providing a roguelike experience in this final DLC of the Far Cry 6 Season Pass. This time, we’re in the mind of Joseph Seed from Far Cry 5 in Hope County, Montana during the aftermath of the disaster at the end of that game. Joseph’s sister Faith and brothers John and Jacob feel betrayed, as if everything that occurred was to benefit only Joseph, and they form the basis of missions to collect three pieces of the fractured cross to be free of Joseph’s mind.
If you haven’t played one of the previous DLC’s before it, we are given a short prelude into Joseph’s premise before commencing our journey of redemption. Starting with just a pistol and the pride trait, which gives us a healing syringe, we set out to collect penance and clear points of interest to unlock new weapons, upgrades, and character traits. If you die, you will lose everything you’re carrying and all the powers you unlocked in that run. The pistol is always free, so remember to grab it from the armory before starting a new run.
There are various points of interest you should visit in your first few runs of Joseph: Control to unlock your favourite weapons and you can unlock some powerful perks at trials. As you start to survive for longer periods, night will fall and you will need to despatch ghostly spirits that will explode if they touch you, though they can be killed with a single bullet. At other times, you’ll see soot and ash falling as you explore forest areas that have been decimated by the disaster of Far Cry 5’s main story conclusion.
Given the roguelike experience, you will want to find the two safe houses which will allow you to save your weapon weapon and unlocked traits, but you’ll lose your penance and mission progress will be reset. The best strategy I find in these DLC is to explore the map, find out where the control points are that contain your favourite weapon(s), then start a fresh run aiming for the three main story missions. Once you find all three pieces of the fractured cross, you’ll then face waves of enemies before eventually escaping Joseph’s mind, completing mind level 1 in this Joseph: Collapse DLC.
Completing this first run then allows you to choose the mind level difficulty for subsequent runs, and in playing these higher difficulties, you’ll unlock higher tiered weapons. Much like my experience in Pagan: Control, I was about 2 hours into a single run in this Joseph: Collapse DLC when my game crashed and I lost all of that mission progress. I could purchase those weapons and find the powers again, but I had to repeat the three main missions again before getting to the final waves. It must be related to my PC given it happens after about 2 hours of play, so hopefully others don’t experience these frustrations.
Overall, Joseph: Collapse is a fitting end to these villainous DLC releases, and if Joseph Seed was a favourite of yours, this is a good chance to see the aftermath of Far Cry 5 from his perspective. The roguelike nature of these DLC has been fun to play despite my crashes and it was good to revisit the three previous Far Cry games to play out a little bit more of their fantastic stories. This review utilised a key provided by Ubisoft ANZ. Joseph: Collapse will release on February 8, 2022 on PC, Xbox and PlayStation.
