If you’re an incredibly passionate Lord of the Rings (LOTR) fan like myself, its’ genuinely never been a more exciting time to dive into the gaming side of Middle Earth. With the recent success of the Shadow of Mordor series, the pending release of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum and EA’s recently announced partnership with Middle-earth Enterprises, it seems the hay-day of LOTR gaming may soon be upon us.
EA has already announced their upcoming mobile title set in the world of Tolkien, with Heroes of Middle-earth . It’s described as a turn-based, collection systems game with a wide roster of beloved characters from both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit (which I know I’ll lose all of my commuting time to). “Players battle through iconic stories from the world of Tolkien and take up the fight against the great evils of Middle-earth,” EA said in its announcement.
For the RTS fans out there who are still desperately wanting a new Battle for Middle Earth, there’s a really exciting fan-made project currently underway: The Battle for Middle Earth: Reforged, which is going to completely remaster (with slight quality of life additions) the original game. If you’re interested in keeping up to date with this project, you can find all of the information and progress posts here.
With the upcoming release of Amazon’s exclusive Ring of Power series, it’s sure to draw even more eyes towards the celebrated franchise, which will likely result in further expansions in the gaming world of Tolkien’s universe, pending a successful reception of the series (which I am sincerely hopeful of). J. R. R. Tolkien truly sparked my love for medieval fantasy, and I’m over-the-moon excited to see all of these upcoming projects come to life. As Gandalf said; “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us”. I for one fully intend on using my time indulging myself in every pending LOTR game to come out, so hopefully I’ll see your battle-hardened face in Middle Earth sometime!
