    OpenAI and DOTA 2

    OpenAI and DOTA 2

Off the back of OpenAI’s defeat of some excellent DOTA 2 players, I thought I would do a write up about OpenAI and what it’s all about.

Open AI is an artificial intelligence company that is sponsored by the likes of Elon Musk, Peter Thiel Jessica Livingston and more. The purpose of OpenAI is to create a General Artificial Intelligence, or an AGI. To do this, they’re creating task specific AI’s to then create an AGI. For DOTA 2 it’s using their AI software called GYM, which is a reinforcement learning algorithm. To put it VERY simply it learns by repeating tasks until it gets a predefined reward, which would be winning a DOTA 2 game. To quote AI “OpenAI Five plays 180 years worth of games against itself every day, learning via self-play”.

If you’ve been on Facebook or even Youtube for the past two years, you would’ve seen stories about AI being dangerous. Some of these are specific to Elon Musk, a sponsor of OpenAI. What Elon is scared of is an AGI. An AGI can be scary because it can be set up with no restrictions, so the AGI could decide that humans are a problem and then it should sort us out. Queue the Terminator music. Elon wants to make a safe AGI and is working OpenAI to do so.

OpenAI will be controlling a hero like a bot does. So five different instances of AI will be used, instead of one instance controlling them all. To give you some context at how advanced AI has become, check out the list below of its restrictions:

    • Mirror match of Necrophos, Sniper, Viper, Crystal Maiden, and Lich
    • No warding
    • No Roshan
    • No invisibility(consumables and relevant items)
    • No summons/illusions
    • No Divine Rapier, Bottle, Quelling Blade, Boots of Travel, Tome of Knowledge, Infused Raindrop
    • 5 invulnerable couriers, no exploiting them by scouting or tanking
    • No Scan

It’s a fun time and an interesting time for DOTA 2. But, what will become of AI in the DOTA 2 scene? In my uneducated opinion, once OpenAI’s bot’s beat the best. People will go back to watching the Pros and OpenAI will become a training tool. It will provide actual feedback to help people play better games. My reason for this is who wants to watch AI beat AI? Maybe there will be different AI companies that will compete, such as OpenAI Vs ClosedAI.

There’s a lot of unknown’s here. Please drop by the Facebook GOA facebook group and let me know if you got some interesting information about AI.
