PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night Hands-on Preview

Chris InglisBy Chris InglisSeptember 23, 2021

The last of my hands-on previews from the recent OG Unwrapped is PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night. Developed by Petoon Studios and published by Outright Games, we will be able to jump in as our favourite characters from the Disney Junior series PJ Masks. This is a 3D action sidescroller game aimed at children aged between 3-7 years old, and is set for release on October 29, 2021 on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Steam.

Set in the world of PJ Masks, this will be the first game on consoles where we’ll be able to play as Amaya, Connor and Greg in eight familiar locations such as PJ Masks HQ, the City Streets and Rooftops, and even on the moon. Living normal lives during the day, at night they become superheroes Catboy, Owlette, and Gekko. With the help of PJ Robot, they will fight crime and save the world from Romeo, Luna Girl, Night Ninja and more villains.

In our hands-on demo, I was able to play one level of the game. Each level has a vehicle sequence, a platforming section where you play as all three characters, and then a boss fight. The vehicle sequences feature one of the character vehicles and both acceleration and turning corners is done automatically. The children are then left to change lanes to avoid obstacles and collect gems. This sequence plays similar to the vehicle segments of the recent Paw Patrol games.

The next sequence was a side scrolling platforming sequence where you play as all three characters. They will face obstacles that require use of their special abilities like Catboy’s speed and double jump, Owlette’s super flying moves over longer distances, and mighty Gekko’s muscles and able to climb up and down walls. If players can collect all of the gems in a level, they will unlock a prize. Scattered within each level, and aren’t hidden too hard so that kids won’t struggle to find them, are coloured PJ Masks icons to collect. Finally, the boss fights involved pressing particular buttons when prompted.

‘We’re beyond excited to be the ones to finally bring the PJ Masks home to consoles in this brand new adventure, our partnership with Hasbro on creating amazing kids video games has been a dream come true’ says Terry Malham, CEO of Outright Games. ‘The PJ Masks are a beloved, modern franchise for kids and really serve that growing audience from pre-school to older kids discovering the world of superhero adventure for the first time. With all our games we want to bring kids into the amazing world of video games and couldn’t think of a better fit for this than the PJ Masks’.

Thanks to SwipeRight PR and Outright Games for this hands-on demo. PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night will release on October 29, 2021 on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Steam.
