PlayStation went ahead with its PlayStation Showcase earlier this morning and kicked off the old E3-style season presentation of a load of upcoming games for the console.
Expectations were high as it had been almost 300 days since Sony had produced a PlayStation Showcase for their PlayStation console there have been many rumours and well-known games in development in the pipeline to get excited about.
I was up at 5 am this morning waiting eagerly to see what we would be looking out for over the next 12 months for the PlayStation console.
The PlayStation Showcase starts off with a cinematic trailer, from the offset the game resembled a Watchdogs-looking game which would be revealed as a competitive heist game called Fairgame$.
Jim Ryan then comes on screen to discuss what’s coming after the 3rd year of the system life cycle. Explaining that developers are just finding their legs on how to create for the console and exciting times are ahead.
Next up was the sequel to a PS3 fan favourite, Hell Divers 2 by Arrowhead, an alien third-person shooter game where you are tasked to protect super-earth
EA Games then showed off their new EA Original title known as Immortals of Aveum – I love the way this game is looking with the shooting glove. I saw the trailer a few weeks ago and this expanded more Immortals of Avem with story and gameplay.
A teaser trailer for Ghostrunner 2 is then shown off. Not much to see here except the new environments on show.
Phantom Blade 0 is now shown and looks like an alternate take in Japanese lore. Combat and sword fighting looks insane with platforming that looks like it was ripped right from Star Wars Jedi games. Especially the wall running. I’m very excited to see more of this and hope it’s not another Dark Souls-type game.
Next up was from the creators of Journey, a new title named Sword of the Sea. Environments can change from sand to water. I loved Journey so it will be great if they can replicate the success of the game. Also, half-pipe sandboarding. Yes, please!
The Talos Principle 2 is now teased. Again, not much is shown off apart from the environments showing off the new PlayStation 5 graphics.
Hand-drawn style game from the makers of Gris in a colourful forest which is then attacked by darkness that plagues the land. Looks like this one could be an emotional game like Ori and this one is called Neva.
What is it with PlayStation and Cats? Next up was Cat Quest: Pirates of the Purribean. Looks like a fun open-land pirate game where you are taken into areas that switch up to a side-scrolling adventure.
Square Enix then showed off a new bright light city-looking 3 v 3 hero shooter, looking like Splatoon with foam. Foamstars. This could be a fun game if done right.
This interesting-looking title made by an Australian team is an interesting storybook-style game where you can eventually leave the book in the playroom. The Plucky Squire is part of the Devolver Digital team.
Teardown was shown next. Already on PC, it’s making its console debut. A Minecraft style of graphics game. All environments are destructible. They are just destroying everything in the trailer, looks like a lot of fun.
The stage is set at the PlayStation Showcase. Ants in a field feed off a dead frog only to be taken away from a bird. Then an anaconda and crocodile get into it – OMG SNAKE!!!!! Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater. Not much is shown of really anything of the game, but then a Master Collection of the 1st three are shown. It will be interesting to see if there are any improvements made, or if they are just part of the classics collections.
A survival-looking game where you build and restore the vegetation of the land with giant spectacular beasts. Towers of Aghasba looks very interesting in terms of their open-world appearance.
More Final Fantasy 16 shows off a lot of combat and story. Not long now for this long-awaited title. I just wish they would release it already
Now this is where I got really excited. ALAN WAKE 2! Two special agents return to an abandoned Bright Falls following a trail left by Alan Wake himself. It looks like you will control a female protagonist who is joined by Sam Lake himself (but voiced by the fantastic James McCaffery) Are we not playing as Alan? A release date is now shown for October 17. According to Twitter follow-ups, this will be a digital-only game to keep the price down.
As if Alan Wake 2 didn’t already have me going. Next up was the first gameplay of Assassins Creed Mirage! Looks almost like a remake of the original combat and looks a lot more stylish compared to the last few rpg styled Assassin’s games. Again, we finally get a release date of October 12
Playstation seems to be the cat console. Revenant Hill, not much is shown of this new Indie title.
A new JRPG game is next in the show. Granblue Fantasy. The graphic style of this game looks awesome!
Street Fighter 6 trailer shows showing off the story and many of the new features of the game. Including the pre-order bonuses. This game is out in two weeks.
Ultros is now shown off. It’s a sidescroller, potentially a Metroidvania-style game. The colours in it are … like Woah man.
Not much is known about the next game, it looks wow. An RPG or is it a Genshin-type game? Anyways, Tower of Fantasy looks insane and I really dig the graphics and the gameplay.
Dragons Dogma 2 finally dropped its first trailer. Looks to be much like the original with creatures, which isn’t a bad thing. But with the obvious graphic leap. I’m very excited about this.
Another five nights at Freddy’s game? Help Wanted 2
Now we have the lineup of upcoming PSVR2 games;
Resident Evil 4 VR, wow not sure if it stand alone or add on
A new zombie shooter. Looks to me like a humorous take on the experience. I’m actually loving the looks of this Arizona Sunshine 2
Crossfire Sierra Squad – looks like it could be a co-op VR game. Then I could be very wrong.
A mind-invading game – Synapsis
Beat Sabre showcase for VR2 with queen pack available
A fairly diverse amount of shooters here. Would have loved to see something different though.
A new game by Bungie is up next. The now-owned PlayStation team is going back to its roots and releasing a remake/reboot of their first-ever title, Marathon. This will be a PvP multiplayer game.
Destiny 2 then does a recap and teases the Final Shape expansion with the return of Nathan Fillion’s Cayde-6 character.
A game called Concord was shown. Nothing much was revealed about this game other than you are referred to as a ‘Free Runner’ and it’s set in space.
Gran Turismo movie trailer
End of the PlayStation Showcase – Jim Ryan tells us there is one more game to show and then talks about Project Q a streaming handheld which had been rumoured over the last few months but also PlayStation branded earbuds. The case looks like a PS5.
Last, but certainly not least. Spider-Man 2 was finally shown off and looks well into the final stages of completion. It first introduces Craven the Hunter and leads him to Manhattan. Then it shows off a mission where Spider-Man and Miles are able to switch at anytime, much like the feature from GTA5. This was a really great showing of many facets of the game.
All in all a solid PlayStation Showcase. I feel like there was a lot shown, but not much substance. This could either be a good or bad thing for PlayStation as they know they have a lot of variety of games coming over the next year. Big names like Wolverine, and Silent Hill were noticeably absent. But big-name teasers such as MGS, and Alan Wake as well as more extensive looks at games coming soon, but on that front, I’m just looking forward to the game at this point. I don’t want them to ruin more of the game. But if people were on the fence over games like Final Fantasy, I think that these perhaps final looks could tip the balance as they look awesome
A solid 7/10 showing for myself.
