UBISOFT’s popular multiplayer tactical shooter Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege will report for duty on Android and iOS mobile platforms later this year.
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege Mobile will involve a “best of 3 rounds” in the core 5v5 Attack vs Defence game mode; game modes confirmed at launch include Bomb and Secure The Area, with Bank and Border among the confirmed maps.
The game will be free-to-play and has been optimised for mobile, including with shorter matches, new gaemplay modes and optimised controls.
Not all 63 Operators from the main game will be available – Ubisoft have said the launch roster will comprise “the most popular Rainbow Six Operators” – but as you can see from the key art, fan favourites such as Sledge, Mute, Caveira, and Hibana will be among them.
Per the official announcement from Ubisoft:
Rainbow Six Mobile has been developed and optimized for mobile with shorter matches and game sessions. Customise the game’s controls in the HUD to fit your playstyle and level of comfort to play on the go.
Plus, new players can get accustomed to the tactical gameplay with a comprehensive player onboarding.
While I haven’t had a chance to play it yet, I have seen pre-release video of the game in action and it certainly does indeed appear to be the core Rainbow Six experience, but on a mobile phone – so I’m very keen to see how it plays when it launches.
It certainly makes sense for Ubisoft to bring Rainbow Six to mobile – the PC/console versions of the game have something like 80 million players, and mobile phones and tablets are now advanced enough that even fairly basic ones can handle FPS games playably.
There’s also the fact Activision-Blizzard’s Call of Duty: Mobile has been downloaded more than 500 million times since it launched in 2017, and made the publisher more than USD$1bn in the process – numbers which cannot have gone unnoticed at Ubisoft HQ.
The exact launch date for Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege Mobile has not been confirmed – just that it’s set for later this year – but keep an eye out here for more information when it becomes available.
