The year was 1989… Pre-1990 World Cup…
I was 15 years old…
Every school holidays that year, me and my scaly mates would make a big venture into the city to catch a flick and hit the arcade.
I don’t remember too much about the flicks we saw, but I do remember the one game that me and said scaly mates would flock to at every opportunity we had.
The one… the only… Kick And Run.
Now, it’s not much to look at now… it wasn’t even really back then… but there was one thing about this game that, back in that day, was almost unheard of.
Say it with me…
FOUR PLAYER CO-OP! And, IT’S A WORLD CUP
That’s right… me and three mates could play out World Cup games simultaneously, two on two, and f*ck me, it was fun.
It’s one of the relics of gaming that’s sort of forgotten now… that back in the day, it was pretty much always two player games.
You have to remember, this is before we got what was in my opinion one of the greatest soccer (football) games in the actual home… the one and only Kick Off.
But even that wasn’t four player… and this was what was completely magical about Kick and Run. The four player all on all option…
Like Super Sprint, but for soccer.
(ah, remember Super Sprint? Surely that’s another Retro Rocks Review that I’ll have to delve into?)
Kick And Run was an absolute ripper! And I pray to every gaming god there is that one day, I get to play it again! I’ll really have to investigate an emulator at some stage!
