Now, we haven’t spoken about this, but I’m pretty sure poor little Pete was a little too young to enjoy the spectacle that was slash is the Speedball series.
This game literally changed my life, back in the day.
As far as I know, there were two in the series. Speedball 1 and Speedball 2, and it’s one of those games that was highly original, highly addictive and one that I reckon would have made a great movie.
If you’ve never seen nor heard of it, it’s a little difficult to explain. Wikipedia explains it as so:
“Speedball is a 1988 video game based on a violent futuristic cyberpunk sport that draws on elements of handball and ice hockey, and rewards violent play as well as goals.”
That’s pretty much it in a nutshell.
It was just so bloody unique at the time.
It was the perfect marriage of playing the game and managing the team. You had to consider everything, and only got better once you got the gist of managing correctly.
What I loved about it too was the amount of games that went down to the wire. God it was exciting! That’s half the reason we game right, for that adrenaline rush.
Mark the Speedball series as one for the ages. If they ever release an Amiga Mini, please, for the love of the Bitmap Brothers, may this classic be on it.
