It may not look like much now, but Super Cars II on the Amiga 500 was a bloody brilliant racing game back in the day, that mixed top-down car racing with some Mario Kart type battles and a bit of a choose your own adventure for good measure.
Just check this out for a bit of retro 16 bit action.
(skip through the Youtube video for the best bits)
So, in Super cars II you’re a race car driver, who’s trying to make your way up the proverbial ladder and top the league with your souped-up race car that may or may not shoot rockets and the like out of it.
(You actually do shoot rockets out of your car, and that’s the whole point. To win the race and inflict as much damage as possible on your fellow racers)
The game was unique in that it brought a storyline to what was essentially a racing game. As you’ll see from the vision above, it also treated the game like you were in a TV show, with the news breaks and what-not.
What I loved about the game is that is wasn’t linear… it was basically a choose your own adventure (multi-choice answers) that definitely guided your journey based on how you answered.
What’s more, it had a sense of humour… Look at the names… if you know your racing, you’ll recognise some of the famous racing names in this list.
For anyone with an Amiga Emulator, this gams is defo worth the time and effort. It was a classic! Up there with Super Sprint and the like for great top down racing fun!
