The wait is finally over for Civilization fans old and new. Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI is finally making it’s console debut today on the Nintendo Switch. A part from its spin-off, Civilization Revolution, it’s the first game in the original series to get a console release. The sixth installment was originally released for Microsoft Windows and macOS back in 2016. Fans have also been able to play the game on the go already with it’s ports to iOS in December of last year. And just like the iOS version available for both iPad and iPhone via the App Store, there will be touch controls. Personally I’m not entirely sure if I’ll rely on them too much since the console in handheld feels too awkward to hold with one hand.
Although the games developer, Firax Games, follows Sid Meier’s rule of retaining, improving and adding new material, something has also been removed. The games publisher, 2K Games, confirmed earlier this month that the Switch version will not include an online multiplayer option. Fortunately though, it does support local multiplayer for up to four people over a wireless network.
If you’re new to Civilization, are interested in picking up the Switch version but aren’t entirely sure how to play, you can check out all three How-to-Play episodes we previously posted here, here and here. Once you’re ready to buy, be prepared. Being a two year old game ported to the Switch, it still comes with a hefty price. You’ll save almost $20 if you shop on Amazon with copies going for $72.
