A brand new animated series based on Sonic The Hedgehog called Sonic Prime has just been announced by Netflix, SEGA and WildBrain. The 24-episode series will premiere on the premium streaming service in 2022. The announcement comes after a wildly successful year for the Sonic franchise back in 2020. While it was hit with backlash due to the new Sonic design, the Sonic The Hedgehog feature film went onto become a box-office hit after a last minute return to his classic look. After becoming a global success, Paramount Pictures also announced a sequel to be released sometime in the future.
“Sonic the Hedgehog is a global entertainment icon that has captivated audiences since its video game debut in 1991. With over 1.14 billion game units sold and downloaded to date, an exciting feature film, a robust licensing program and more, SEGA’s iconic hedgehog continues to surprise and delight audiences worldwide,” says Chief Brand Offiver at SEGA, Ivo Gerscovich. “We’re thrilled to partner with WildBrain, Man of Action Entertainment and Netflix to speed into this new, animated chapter in the Sonic franchise.”
Sonic Prime is said to be targeted towards audiences aged 6-11 and features the famous “Blue Blur” as he helps save a strange new multiverse as well as embark on a journey of self-discovery and reflection. Man of Action Entertainment have also been brought on as Executive Producers/showrunners for Sonic Prime. Their past works include the creation of Ben 10 as well as characters in Big Hero 6.
“Sonic is a beloved character and holds a special place in everyone’s heart including my own,” Director of Original Animation at Netflix, Dominique Bazay remarks. “I spent many hours with the blue blur as a kid and it’s a privilege to be able to bring this character everyone knows and loves on a brand new adventure with Netflix — one that a generation of loyal fans and brand new fans around the world can enjoy.”
