DO you own a PS4? Have you somehow managed not to play the excellence that is the Uncharted series? Sony are going to help you rectify that shocking oversight by giving you a free copy of The Nathan Drake Collection as part of their COVID-19 relief “Play At Home” initiative.
From 9am AEST tomorrow (April 16) until 9am AEST on May 6, PlayStation owners can redeem a free copy (to keep!) of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and also the game Journey.
The Nathan Drake Collection comprises three games: Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.
The Uncharted games are great fun – I’m a big fan of them, and my primary school aged son loves them too – combining action, adventure, lost treasure, and puzzles that are at just the right level of challenging without being infuriating.
In fact, I’m astounded they haven’t managed to get the Nathan Drake film made yet, since it’s such an obvious and natural fit for a big-screen adventure of even a streaming TV series. Soon, hopefully…
The other free game is Journey, which is billed as “a beautiful, celebrated adventure that is as moving as it is mysterious”.
I haven’t had a chance to play it (yet), but have heard good things about it – and Sony note “the game’s life-affirming message is timeless, and perhaps more important now than ever before.”
Also, it’s free, which is another excellent reason to play it.
The Play At Home Initiative will also involve Sony’s USD$100 million COVID-19 Global Relief Fund being used to “help those on the front lines against the pandemic, support children and educators working remotely, and provide assistance to the creative community”.
Sony have also earmarked USD$10m to help fund independent game developers, describing them as “vital to the heart and soul of the gaming community”, with more information about the fund, including participation criteria, expected to be available soon.
The Official PlayStation Blog post announcing the initiative notes that “during these days of physical distancing, fans have turned to gaming for moments of respite and enjoyment”.
“Sony Interactive Entertainment feels privileged to bring this much-needed entertainment to the community and know this is just one small step and are thankful to be able to offer this support to the players, the communities, and to partners,” it said.
