Blizzcon 2018 was held over the weekend and one shining star that was announced amongst all of the epic announcements, was a remaster of 2002’s Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos!! When I heard this news I was jumping for joy as it’s been a long 16 years since the original game was released.
Picture this – it’s July 2002 and my 21st birthday. Usually on your 21st you go out with your friends and get blind drunk. That life was not for me. Instead, I was celebrating at the family home with my huge flock of uncles, aunties, cousins and some of my closest mates. One of my mates was a dead set legend and actually bought me Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos as a birthday present. What a bloody ripper!!
We scoffed down lunch and I blubbered my way through my 21st birthday video montage (I cry at these things!), we then shot straight to the front study (aka the ‘pooter room’) to install and load up this new game! We had played Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal to death and were eagerly awaiting this release. Man it was good! I fondly remember clicking my orcs to work and them saying some funny phrases like “Me busy, Leave me alone!” and “Poke, poke, poke – is that all you do?”, and then ‘Oh, that was kind of nice.”
Not only was Warcraft III a great RTS game in it’s own right, it also spawned some epic mods and spin-offs after the second expansion was released – The Frozen Throne. Player-made games such as Tower Defence and the original Defence of the Ancients (DOTA) graced our PC’s and the rest is history.
Fast forward to today and we are looking ahead at a 2019 release for Warcraft III Reforged which is a complete reimagining of the classic. This new game will feature reforged visuals of the heroes, units, buildings and environment, 62 missions that span the continents, playing four diverse races each with unique strategies, units, abilities and champions. Here’s a cinematic trailer and gameplay trailer to get you as excited as I am!
For more information about Warcraft III Reforged and to pre-order, head over to the Blizzard website or check it out in the Battle.net app. (Oops I just clicked the pre-order button, how did that happen!?)
