THE regular WWE 2K simulation franchise might be taking a break for the year but it doesn’t mean we’re getting a break from wrestling either. WWE 2K Battlegrounds launched today bringing a fresh wrestling experience to fans new and old. Similar to NBA 2K Playgrounds, Battlegrounds steers more towards arcade gameplay than it does as a wrestling simulation.
“We’re excited to add WWE 2K Battlegrounds to 2K’s growing portfolio of WWE and licensed sports properties, and to offer yet another way for gamers to enjoy WWE video game action,” said David Ismailer, President at 2K. “This arcade-style brawler offers a completely different experience from our WWE 2K simulation franchise and WWE SuperCard collectible card battling game, that we’re confident fans will enjoy.”
WWE 2K Battlegrounds can be played solo or with friends in local and online co-op in multiple mode, including 1v1, 2v2 Cage Matches and Fatal Four-Way just to name a few. While it may be a more casual experience than the regular franchise, Battlegrounds features a comic book-style campaign mode where you “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Paul Heyman in finding the next WWE Superstars.
The roster also packs a punch with more than 70 WWE Superstars to either unlock via progress or purchase with in-game currency. And that’s just at launch, as more than 60 additional Superstars are expected to be added in the future through free updates.
“WWE 2K Battlegrounds marks a definitive new chapter in our partnership with 2K,” said Sarah Cummins, WWE Senior Vice President, Consumer Products. “The combination of over-the-top arcade action, social fun for friends and family, and fantasy matchups between current WWE Superstars and Legends will keep fans on the edge of their seats.”
WWE 2K Battlegrounds is available on Playstation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Steam. A Digital Deluxe Edition is also available which includes WWE Hall of Famer Edge®; all versions of Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and Ronda Rousey® unlocked at the beginning of play; 1100 bonus Golden Bucks, an in-game currency that can be used to unlock Superstars and cosmetic items.
